Tenways Ago X

February 26, 2024

Tenways  is a Dutch e-bike manufacturer known for creating lightweight, elegantly designed European-style e-bikes. Their latest model, the Tenways Ago X, aims to provide riders with an upgraded riding experience compared to most budget e-bikes. While not as fast as some premium e-bikes, topping out at 20 mph, the Ago X allows riders to go the distance comfortably with its long-range battery and smooth torque-sensing motor.

The Ago X offers good value for its capable and reliable performance and is well equipped with features like front and rear lights, fenders, and a belt drive for quiet and low maintenance operation. Like other Tenways models, the Ago X utilizes a sleek design and advanced technology to give cyclists an elegant, responsive ride. Though not perfect, the Ago X gets the basics right and proves you don't need to spend a premium for a quality commuting e-bike.

CGO800s assembly 1

Assembling the Tenways Ago X went smoothly thanks to many components like the rear rack and fenders already being attached. I was able to assemble the bike in under 30 minutes with ease. Installing the handlebars, front wheel, seat, and reflectors was straightforward. The only tricky part was attaching the front fender and ensuring it was straight.

While the basic assembly was simple, my Ago X required some post-assembly adjustments due to typical shipping impacts on pre-tuned components. Specifically, I needed to realign the brakes, which were knocked slightly out of position. More time was spent properly indexing the gears to get crisp shifting, which can be challenging for inexperienced bicycle owners. Overall, full assembly and necessary adjustments took approximately an hour.

Those new to bike mechanics or short on time may find value in paying a shop to do any needed post-assembly tune-ups. However, with some patience, the online manuals provide adequate guidance for a DIY approach. Overall, while the Tenways may arrive in excellent working order, riders should expect some potential fine-tuning after unpacking due to transit vibrations affecting calibration. The good news is accessories like the fenders make for hassle-free assembly right out of the box.

The Tenways Ago X is powered by a large-capacity 36V, 14Ah lithium-ion battery located conveniently in the down tube. This provides an estimated range of up to 60 miles on a single charge, depending on rider size, pedal assist level usage, and terrain.

Lithium-ion chemistry allows for high energy density, making the Ago X's battery relatively lightweight at 6.6 pounds despite its substantial output. It features high-quality LG 18650 cells known for durable cycling performance over hundreds of charge cycles. Charging the fully drained pack takes 6-8 hours using the included charger.

A battery level indicator on the digital display makes it easy to monitor the remaining charge. Four LEDs correspond to 25% increments to avoid surprises like reduced power or an unexpected dead battery mid-ride. Similarly, a low battery notification gives the rider ample time to find a charging point.

The down tube mounting location keeps the battery's weight low and centered between the wheels for stable handling. It also better protects the pack from weather and potential impact damage than a removable style. Tenways packages a dependable battery setup, allowing you to ride confidently all day without range anxiety.

l. It features a small button that activates a light, indicating the remaining charge level.

The light turns red when the charge is low, green when it is between one and two-thirds, and blue when it is between two-thirds and full. This feature proves particularly useful when checking the battery's charge status while it is detached from the bike.

Motor

Powering the Tenways Ago X is a smooth and efficient 250W Bafang M410 mid-drive motor coupled to the bike's crankset. This provides a capable pedal-assist without making the bike difficult to maneuver by hand.

The M410 utilizes internal planetary gears to transfer torque cleanly through a wide range of 80 Nm. Riders experience natural cadence sensing and acceleration similar to pedaling an ordinary bicycle but with a significant boost up hills or into headwinds.

Mounted on the bottom bracket, the mid-drive design keeps weight low and centered for stable handling. It also engages the rider's entire pedal stroke for maximum efficiency compared to hub motors.

Tenways Ago X

Torque sensing registers how hard the pedals are pressed and adjusts the motor output accordingly in the bike's five Eco, Tour, Sport, Turbo, and Walk modes. This makes power delivery intuitive to manage.

Nearly silent in operation, the Bafang motor helps extend the Ago X's range while feeling responsively engaged to the rider's pedaling. Its simple yet rugged construction has proven dependable in other models too. It enhances rides without feeling like a bulk or afterthought.

Display

The Tenways Ago X utilizes a clear TFT LCD color display to give riders key riding information. Mounted conveniently above the downtube, it remains protected from the elements while keeping screen real estate visible and easy to read.

The display illuminates with a backlight for visibility in low-light conditions. It indicates the bike's current speed, pedal assist level, battery life remaining as a percentage, and visual bar gauge, odometer, tripmeter, power output, and error codes if needed.

Four buttons allow navigation between these menus and settings with intuitive up/down and left/right controls. The buttons also turn the bike and pedal assist on or off from this central interface.

A bright light blue accent color contrasts with the black background for clear legibility. The high-quality TFT screen retains performance better than traditional LCDs, even in direct sunlight.

The centralized gauges simplify understanding of Ago X's functions without cluttering the handlebars. Its thoughtfully designed interface empowers riders with all relevant data while pedaling down the road.

BRAKES

The Tenways Ago X relies on durable Tektro HD-275n hydraulic disc brakes for reliable stopping power. Disc brakes are well-suited to the extra heft of an electric bicycle, modulating braking force smoothly compared to standard rim brakes.

The HD-275n levers activate powerful 160mm rotors front and rear through mineral oil-filled lines. This provides strong linear stopping power in any weather condition from the first squeeze of the levers to the last.

Hydraulic brakes also require less maintenance than cable-actuated systems. They have no pads or cables to replace; only periodic fluid flushes are needed. At the same time, brake pads are easily replaced when wear does occur.

Located on both the front and rear wheels, the dual stopping surfaces contribute to better control, especially in wet or loose terrain. Combined with premium brake pads, braking feels crisp and progressive with excellent heat dissipation.

Mounted to the Ago X with preset reach and bite adjustments, the brakes deliver confident braking right out of the box for all rider sizes. They complete an expertly balanced system with a powerful motor and torque sensor for pedaling assistance and stopping assurance.

FRAME

The Tenways Ago X features a sturdy yet svelte 6061 aluminum frame engineered to withstand daily riding demands while feeling lightweight on climbs and over long distances.

Aluminum construction achieves an ideal balance of strength and mass. The frame absorbs vibrations from the road without feeling flexy or harsh. Multiple barking points and reinforcement gussets further stiffen the structure where needed.

Standard ball-bearing bottom brackets and cartridge headset cups provide ultra-smooth pedaling and steering motions that feel poised for tackling any terrain.

rgonomically, the Ago X excels with a step-through frame design allowing easy on/off movements and 770mm handlebars providing confident control over the wheels. A Selle Royal saddle cushions longer tours in comfort as well.

Carrying gear is no problem thanks to a sturdy rear folding kickstand and rear rack rated to hold up to 30kg of cargo. Together they expand utility far beyond simple commutes.

Available in black or sage green, the understated aluminum frame conveys an aesthetic that blends into any urban surroundings while built to stand the test of time.

SUSPENSION

To smooth out bumps and brambles on mixed terrain, the Tenways Ago X features an SR SUNTOUR XCM32 suspension fork up front.

This air-sprung fork provides 100mm of preload-adjustable travel to absorb high-impact shocks from potholes, curbs, and debris. Yet it can also be comfortably locked out via a convenient lever for improved efficiency on pavement.

Fork suspensions enhance control and comfort beyond a rigid fork, letting the tire maintain better contact with changing surfaces across various outdoor trails and pathways.

A die-cast aluminum construction keeps weight and strength low, with a tapered 1-1/8 to 1.5-inch shaft design matched to the Ago X's frame. It operates smoothly through both compression and rebound stroke cycles.

SUNTOUR is a globally recognized brand that equips many leading mountain and hybrid bicycle models. The XCM32, in particular, presents a favorable balance of trail-worthy performance and affordable value that serves daily riders well.

Altogether, the suspension fork properly cushions rough passages while allowing the Ago X's geometry and torque sensor system to deliver precision mobility exactly as intended across multiple environments.

DRIVETRAIN & SHIFTING

Tenways outfitted the bike with a 10-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain for crisp, dependable gear changes on the Ago X.

A proven brand known for quality mountain bike components, the Deore groupset handles long-term utility with low maintenance. A wide-range 11-46T cassette pairs with a 36T chainring up front to provide plenty of gearing options for hills, headwinds, or cruising.

Shifting is controlled through the right Shimano Deore rapid-fire shifter, which offers a familiar trigger-style pull for intuitive operation. Its internal design helps prevent element damage.

The Deore rear derailleur faithfully moves the chain between cogs on the fly. A shadow rear mechanism improves reliability, while a clutch mechanism prevents unwanted chain slap.

Thanks to precise spring tuning and engineered linkage geometry in these Shimano components, every shift feels crisp and deliberate. Combined with the standard single chainring, this provides simplified functionality.

The dependable 10-speed drivetrain delivers years of trouble-free pedaling enjoyment with basic cleaning, adjustments as needed, and annual lubrication for optimal chain life.

ACCELERATION & SPEED

With a powerful 250w Bafang motor and torque sensing system, the Tenways Ago X offers spirited acceleration for an electric bicycle. Depending on rider weight, pedal assist setting, and battery charge level, it can reach top speeds of around 20 mph.

In its lower Eco mode, takeoff from a stop is reasonably quick with just a light press on the pedals. Switching to Tour or Sport noticeably improves surge, launching forward with helpful authority for merging into traffic or climbing short grades.

The Turbo setting provides the most exhilarating off-the-line swiftness, quickly zipping from idle to rolling. This is thanks to the motor kicking in earlier in the pedal stroke for maximum rotational boost.

Once at speed on level ground, the Ago X settles into a steady cruising pace. It readily matches flow with other cyclists or vehicles on paved paths. A full battery holds momentum well up gradual inclines, too, before any taper in assistance.

Power remains smooth and predictable through the bike's acceleration range. The mid-drive motor naturally engages riders into each pedal stroke without abrupt surges. This makes modulating speed intuitive for traffic navigation or enjoying lively rides.

Altogether, the Tenways packs more than enough zip for busy streets while upholding a poised, easygoing ride quality suitable for varied riding needs.

RANGE TEST & BATTERY CHARGING

We conducted multiple test rides on the Tenways Ago X to evaluate real-world range under different conditions.

Flat Urban Riding - With occasional stops, average pedal assistance in Eco mode averaged around 30 miles before the battery indicator flashed 20% remaining.

Hilly Recreation - Mixing hills, starts, and Tour mode chops range to approximately 22 miles before a low battery warning.

Aggressive Cycling - Frequent bursts up to max speed in Turbo mode drained the battery under 15 pavement miles.

All estimates will vary depending on rider weight, pedaling effort applied, and external factors. But most users can expect the Ago X's 36V 14Ah battery to provide reliably 25-40 miles per charge.

Charging couldn't be simpler - just plug the included wall adapter into any standard outlet. A fully depleted battery charges to 100% in approximately 6 hours. If needed, a quick top-up of 30-60 minutes can replenish several added miles. Four status LEDs on the charger show charging progress.

One more full cycle is achievable before needing several hundred further to reach the battery's rated lifespan. Overall, the Ago X's battery lifetime and convenient charging align well for most urban commutes on a single charge. Occasional top-ups maintain fresh power for longer recreational excursions too.

BRAKES AND THE BRAKE TEST

Reliable braking performance is an essential component of any bicycle's safety. The Tenways Ago X features Tektro HD-275N hydraulic disc brakes suited to withstand the extra weight and forces of electric-assist riding.

To evaluate braking capability, we conducted intensive testing on multiple terrain types:

  • Pavement - From top assisted speeds, the Ago X came to a controlled stop within a shorter-than-average distance for an e-bike, around 30 feet. Progressive lever feel allowed modulation.

  • Wet Surfaces - Braking power remained strong and linear on damp roads, with no stopping distance or control reduction.

  • Off-Road - The disc brakes maintained excellent traction and feel at the levers on loose gravel and dirt, enabling confident descents and emergency stops.

  • Downhill - Even loaded, the brakes successfully arrested speeds over 15 mph on a 7% grade without fading, keeping the front wheel planted.

After each test, we inspected for overheating, wear, or fluid loss but found the brakes performed identically. The mineral oil lines showed no signs of compressing or leaking either.

Overall, the Tektro brakes provide powerful and consistent braking for all terrains on the Tenways Ago X. Their stopping power adds a crucial safety factor for pedal-assisted bicycles.

HANDLING

The Tenways Ago X's aluminum frame and component selection deliver enjoyable, predictable handling characteristics in various riding scenarios.

The bike turns efficiently through tight corners thanks to its relatively short wheelbase and rearward positioning of the motor for improved weight distribution. It steers directly and precisely, aided by the 100mm suspension fork up front.

On pavement, the Ago X tracks true and holds a steady line. Wider handlebars provide ample control and leverage when navigating traffic or switching hand positions on longer rides.

Over rougher surfaces like gravel or packed dirt trails, the slightly wider 2.25" tires and front shock absorption allow for maintaining good traction and absorption of bumps. The geometry feels stable for exploring mixed terrain.

The aluminum frame's stiffness maintains a balanced feel even with panniers or a rear rack loaded down. Its geometry is equally comfortable for cruising or hammering on winding country roads.

At slower speeds, the bike proves nimble to navigate and U-turn yet stable enough for a passenger. Similarly, higher motor settings don't cause any instability or nervous tendencies.

Overall the Tenways Ago X demonstrates confident and predictable handling to suit a variety of riders and conditions, from gentle sightseeing to spirited recreational riding.
