What Are The Benefits Of Electric Bikes?
If you’re wondering whether or not electric bikes are worth the hype, here are a few noteworthy reasons why they’re worth giving a shot. (You can find more info in the ultimate guide to electric bikes.)
Although they aren’t entirely pollution-free, out of all motorized means of transportation known to man, electric bikes are the ones that have a minimal environmental impact. With the rising issues of climate change and global warming, we should all make a conscious effort to minimize our impact as much as possible – and switching from a car to an electric bike could be the first step in that direction.
Electric bikes have a definite edge over traditional ones – thanks to the integrated motor, they offer an option called battery-powered “pedal assist.” It does exactly what you think – give your pedaling a boost when you need to cover more considerable distances, but don’t want to overwork your muscles and joints.
You can’t ignore the fact that an electric bicycle does come with a bit more versatility. Even with the motor attached, you can still use them in a more traditional, fitness-friendly manner. And when you need a viable daily driver, an electric bike still holds enough power to get you to your destination on time.
Best Folding E-Bike Under $1000
Designed to be folded into a more compact form, folding electric bikes are a revolutionary, game-changing concept that took the biking industry by surprise.
And once you include the convenience of having a battery-powered motor into the mix, you get one of the most versatile means of commuting.
1. SWAGTRON SwagCycle EB-5 Pro
Thanks to its unisex design combined with highly adjustable seat and handlebars, we’re able to recommend this bike to both adults, as well as teens of nearly every height and body type.
Aside from that, the low-step frame is another welcome addition, as it makes getting on and off the bike surprisingly easy.
The aluminum alloy frame’s triple-fold design is one of its main advantages. It combines durability with convenience, allowing you to store or carry your electric bike without much hassle.
The choice of material also made an impact on the bike’s overall weight. It’s easily one of the most lightweight folding electric bikes we came across, weighing only 37 pounds.
There’s a lot to be said regarding saddle and handlebar adjustments, as you have all the freedom to customize them to your height and body type. Besides the usual height adjustments, the handlebars have an additional 360-degree twist, allowing you to find the most comfortable resting position for your wrists.
Speed-wise, it comes with a limitation of offering only one level of assist, which is a huge let-down.
On the flip side, the advanced braking system combines V-brakes with Swagtron’s signature Autoguard technology that disengages the motor automatically whenever you apply the brakes. You get an added element of safety along with highly effective stopping power.
The air-filled rubber tires are fitted around 14-inch wheels and offer a sufficient amount of traction for a comfortable, secure ride. Also, the convenience of quick-disconnect power cables is hard to beat maintenance-wise.
The 250W rear hub motor is powered by an integrated, rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery with a pretty decent charging time of 4 to 5 hours.
When used in throttle-only mode, the fully charged battery holds power for up to 15.5-mile-long rides at a 15MPH maximum speed. It’s not fast, but it’s more than enough to get you from point A to point B.
2. ANCHEER Folding Electric Mountain Bike
The Ancheer is an example of an electric bike that has it all – from the full suspension and the powerful motor to the folding frame and compatibility with various riding scenarios.
Whether you’re making your way home from work or hitting some off-road paths, this folding electric bike will handle it.
Its sleek, imposing presence that combines the cool, yet robust mountain bike design with the convenience of a folding frame is bound to draw attention.
Constructed out of aluminum alloy, and topped off with an anti-exposure, rust-resistant finish, it’s both durable and lightweight, which is the perfect combination portability-wise.
The cushioned seat is height adjustable and paired with a mid-curve handlebar so that you can adapt it to your body type. However, although it’s far from uncomfortable, it may not be to everyone’s liking.
The drivetrain comprises out of an impressive 21-speed Shimano transmission system. Besides giving you plenty of gearing options in both pedal assistance and throttle-only modes, it has the added benefit of making the Ancheer feel a lot less like an average folding bike, and more like a full-blown mountain bike.
Its stopping power comes from dual, front and rear mechanical disc brakes. They feel responsive all around, without being overly touchy or requiring too much force to engage.
The 26-inch, six-spoke wheels are made from double-layer magnesium alloy and utilize a versatile anti-slip tire tread design, along with dual suspension, and a high-strength carbon steel front fork for a sufficient amount of shock absorption.
A 36V/8AH Lithium battery powers the 250W brushless rear hub motor develops a speed of around 15MPH, and covers distances of up to 30 miles, depending on one of the three work modes used.

Best Electric Mountain Bike Under $1000
Designed to handle rough, uneven terrain that typical road bikes never could, the best electric mountain bikes have the added advantage of adding motor power and speed into the mix, as well.
So, whenever the terrain becomes too much for you to handle, you can rely on the bike’s motor to take over and get you where you need to be.
1. Kemanner 26 inch Electric Mountain Bike
When it comes to budget-friendly all-terrain electric mountain bikes, the Kemanner takes the cake. You can take it out on bumpy roads, sand, and any other challenging surface without ever doubting its performance.
The Kemanner 26-inch Electric Mountain Bike adopts a lightweight, yet surprisingly sturdy aluminum frame, which ensures two things – less drag and a faster ride. At the same time, it doesn’t compromise any of the maneuverability.
The seat is on the smaller side, and a bit hard, too, which could be a problem during longer rides. The handlebar is adjustable, and as long as you find a more suitable replacement for the original seat, comfort shouldn’t be an issue.
The front suspension, along with other components, primarily the professional-level, 21-speed Shimano transmission system, offers a decent level of shock absorption and control over the bike.
We weren’t surprised to see mechanical disc brakes on both the front and the rear wheel. If that's what it takes to lend it the all-weather stopping power you can rely on, who are we to complain about it?
The 26-inch bead spoke wheels are constructed out of aluminum alloy and fitted with anti-slip, wear-resistant tires for outstanding performance on various terrains, as well as different weather conditions. We’re confident that it would perform well even on wet or snowy dirt trails.
Combining a 250W brushless motor with a 36V/8AH Lithium battery this electric bike may not be the most powerful one out of the bunch. It still packs a mighty enough punch to let you ride over different terrain comfortably, and reach speeds of 15 to 21.7MPH, though.
Granted, the speed and the battery’s capacity both depend on your preferred mode of riding. In e-bike mode, the battery will hold for around 15 miles, and with pedal-assist on, you can get up to 31 miles out of a single charge.
Overall, it’s a serious candidate for the title of the best electric mountain bike under $1000.
2. Aceshin 26'' Electric Mountain Bike
This bike is equipped with all the right features and components to tackle hills and off-road terrains and performs exceptionally well on flat and relatively smooth surfaces, which is already more than you could ever ask for in an entry-level electric mountain bike.
Moreover, its frame is constructed out of durable, rust-resistant aluminum alloy, and build-wise, we couldn’t find a single complaint. The Aceshin is the definition of a well-made electric mountain bike.
When you count in the battery, the bike weighs around 50 pounds, which isn’t ideal, but it does make for a sturdy electric mountain bike. Plus, it allows it to handle weights of up to 330 pounds, which is outstanding by all accounts.
The ergonomic design, complete with a height-adjustable seat and handlebar, ensures comfort, convenience, and ease of travel.
The high-speed gear system comprises out of the 21-speed transmission, which is combined with two standard modes of operation, electric-only and pedal-assisted, as well as three levels of assistance. More importantly, switching to higher gears when you’re navigating steep climbs feels smooth and effortless.
Again, on a mountain bike like this one, front and rear disc brakes are always a reliable safety option.
The bike’s equipped with a carbon steel front suspension fork and a pair of "aggressive" tires fitted on 26-inch, double-layer aluminum alloy wheels. That’s where the added strength and comfort on rough terrains come from on this bike.
Once you start pushing the pedals, you’ll engage the bike’s 250W brushless motor, powered by a removable, 36V 8AH Lithium-Ion battery. You can expect it to cover between 15.5 and 31 miles on average, and develop a maximum speed of a little over 18MPH, although that depends on the selected level of assistance.
To top it all off, you always have the option to ride it like a regular bike while you’re waiting for the battery to charge.
Overall, if you need a quality electric commuter bike that could also perform in off-road scenarios, too, this one’s worth considering.
Best Electric Bike Cruiser Under $1000
Best suited for flat surfaces and lower speeds, cruisers are intended for casual settings, relaxing rides around town, running errands, or making your way around campus.
Combining this casual vibe with a battery-powered motor is what truly took things to the next level, though.
1. NAKTO 26" 250W Electric Bicycle
Nothing beats an electric bike cruiser when it comes to casual rides around town, and with this model from NAKTO, a brand that delivers quality electric cruisers time and again, it can be a lot of fun, too.
The beautiful design, combined with user-friendly controls and top-notch mechanics make this one a treat to ride.
The steep, low-step frame lends it a somewhat old school feel, while also combining that signature retro vibe with quite a few sophisticated features.
Built around a high-strength carbon steel frame, this electric bicycle by NAKTO is the epitome of strength and durability. The frame does make it heavy, which requires some getting used to, but the bike’s ability to withstand not only long city commutes but some rough terrain, as well, makes it a worthy trade-off.
Both the handlebar and the saddle height and inclination can be customized to your preference, which is a plus, but the actual seat is on the narrower, firmer side, which could prove to be uncomfortable during longer rides.
The bike features a 6-speed Shimano transmission system, which may seem limited at first glance, but for a cruiser, it’s more than enough. The derail system operates flawlessly, and slides into gear with ease, too.
The brake system combines a standard V-brake that clamps the front wheel with a rear expansion brake, and overall perform well when it’s time to put a bike this heavy to a full stop.
All of the bike’s mechanics work hand in hand with a set of 26-inch wheels to give you accurate steering, quick acceleration, and a safe stop.
Behind the bike’s two working modes is a 250W brushless motor. It might not be the most powerful option you'll come across, but it’s more than enough for a smooth and surprisingly silent ride, with an average speed of 18 to 25 MPH.
The 36V/10AH lithium battery is easy to remove and charge. Considering that it holds its charge for up to 35 miles when used in pedal-assist mode, it’s fair to call it long-lasting, too.
Best Fat Tire Electric Bike Under $1000
When equipped with a suitable motor, the so-called “fat bikes,” with their extra-wide tires and sturdy construction, become virtually unstoppable.
They perform equally as good on challenging terrain as they do on city streets. That’s why getting a fat-tire electric bike means you're getting the best of both worlds.
1. ECOTRIC Fat Tire Electric Bike
"A Superb Fatty E-Bike"
If you want an electric bike that has a bit more off-road capabilities, outstanding stability, and comfort, the ECOTRIC Fat Tire Electric Bike offers all that and more.
Beach or snow, dirt trails or roads, this bike is ready for action in any environment.
It features a sturdy aluminum alloy frame with a damage-resistant finish, as well as a fixed front suspension fork. All the other components, including welds, finish, disc brakes, pedals, and gears, seem to be of excellent quality, too.
The seat is height-adjustable and reasonably comfortable, but the handlebar may be too low for taller individuals. If that turns out to be an issue for you, a handlebar extension might be your best bet.
The Shimano 7-gear shifting system, although limited compared to what other models have to offer, lets you switch from one gear to another smoothly. Also, there’s an outstanding balance between the seven available speeds and the five levels of pedal assist that lets you mix and match to find a comfortable pace.
Both the front and rear wheels are fitted with Tektro Novela 160mm mechanical disc rotor brakes, a standard for fat tire bikes, along with an outage braking system for added security.
The 26 by 4-inch wear-proof, anti-skidding fat tires are designed to adapt to complex topography, including sand, snow, city roads, and dirt trails. It performs outstandingly well regardless of the terrain.
At 500W, its brushless rear hub motor is both powerful and quiet, propelling the bike on all its own in throttle-only mode with speed reaching up to 20MPH on average. On that note, it features both pedal-assisted and throttle-only modes.
The driving force behind the motor is a removable 36V, 12AH Lithium battery that will give you the coverage of 25 miles on a single full charge, without pedaling. This number grows to 35 miles when you include some pedaling in the mix.
Overall, it’s a solid choice for someone who's looking for a quality bike that they can take anywhere, from city streets to dirt roads.
2. NAKTO Electric Bicycle Fat Tire Mountain E-Bike
If we had to describe the NAKTO Electric Fat Tire Mountain Bike in three words, it would be fast, powerful, and comfortable.
It’s no surprise that, even at first glance, the NAKTO looks robust and reliable considering that it’s built like a tank. The high-strength carbon steel frame is tough enough to handle anything you throw its way. At the same time, its low-step frame design gives it a comfortable, user-friendly appearance.
As a result of this sturdy construction, it can easily carry riders weighing up to 220 pounds. And with the easily adjustable seat height, we’re confident that it could work for individuals who are over 6 feet tall, too.
The NAKTO operates in two modes, Assisted and E-Bike, with the former offering five different levels of operation. Combined with Shimano 6-speed transmission system, it allows for a smooth, comfortable ride on both flat roads, as well as steep terrain.
The bike is equipped with a pair of disc brakes, and while they’re far from ineffective, the stopping distance may be less than ideal safety-wise. You’ll undoubtedly have to put some force into it.
The front suspension forks feature shock absorbers, which, combined with the 26 by 4-inch fat tires, ensure a comfortable ride on rough terrain and increased gripping capabilities. Regardless of the surface, the bike always feels comfortable, stable, and safe.
The 36V, 10AH removable Lithium battery is the power source behind this bike’s powerful 350W brushless gear motor, giving you up to 35 miles of combined coverage on a full charge. Moreover, you can easily reach speeds of around 30MPH, and in full throttle mode, it does have that motorcycle feel to it.
There are far better options in the fat tire e-bike category, though, at least when it comes to handling all road and weather conditions.
Best E-Bike Kit Under $1000
Including a conversion kit into a round-up of the best electric bikes under $1000 may seem like an unconventional move on our part. However, it’s our way of saying that you have other options here.
If you already invested in a top-notch bicycle, you'll save quite a bit of money if you decide to go down the DIY conversion kit route, instead.
"A Great Alternative"
Bafang BBS02 conversion kit’s nearly universal compatibility lets you transform any regular bike into a mid-drive powerhouse. Its main advantage is that it keeps the weight of the battery and the motor low and centered.
So, as long as your current pedal bike has a standard 68 to 73 mm bottom bracket, you can count on this kit to turn it into a motorized one.
With the Bafang BBS02B, you’ll get a mid-drive 48V, 750W motor, a brake lever, a thumb throttle, a chain wheel and cover, a crank, a central LCD display, a speed sensor and a set of magnets, a 1-to-4 cable, a set of nuts, as well as a headlight.
Weirdly, they decided not to include the 48V, 12AH/17.5AH battery and charger in the original kit, but you have the option to buy them separately, though.
The Bafang BBS02B boasts quick and easy installation, but it’s no different than other mid-drive motors, so, you still have to remove the bike’s bottom bracket. If you have no experience whatsoever with bicycle mechanics, doing the conversion yourself will probably take a bit more than an hour promised by the manufacturer.
The motor itself runs relatively smooth and quiet, and the 750W version certainly offers a significant power boost compared to the previous options. In full-power mode, it could easily reach speeds of anywhere between 30 and 35MPH, depending on the wheel size and chaining.
The driving force behind the motor is the 48V, 12AH/17.5AH battery mentioned earlier. Since the engine offers two riding modes, the battery’s coverage will vary based on the level of assist. That said, you can expect to get a good 25 miles minimum in E-Bike mode.
Although it has its limitations, it’s possibly the best electric bike kit under $1000.If you’re interested, you can find our detailed take on electric bike conversions kits here.
