Bafang 8Fun mid-drive kit Review + Guide

The best Bafang 8Fun mid drive kit was the winner of our e-bike conversion kit roundup review. Let’s take a look why we rate this kit so highly here at Electric Biking.

The product is an electric bike kit conversion kit, which functions as a mid-drive system. This means that the kit is integrated into the crank  (the pedals) in the middle of you’re bike.

The kit comes in two flavours so take in what Bafang has brought to the table:

    Bafang 8fun Mid-Drive Kit

Bafang 8fun750W with Lithium Ion battery

This bundle features a 500w crank motor with mid-drive to be fitted on a bottom bracket of a bicycle between 68mm-72mm. There are aftermarket parts if your bike does not fit the bracket requirements. The maximum speed of the electric bike kit with battery is 25mph. It comes with a programmable display panel with LCD screen, 46T chainring, and a pair of brake levers to cut off the power as needed. It also includes a thumb throttle and a speed sensor with a wire harness.

The crank motor of the kit comes programmed with ten modes. These modes allow pedal assist to run, only the engine to run, or the ability to pedal without using any of the battery. Pedal assist is only active while pedaling, meaning you can run the motor with the throttle only. The mid-drive component of the electric bike battery kit enables your bike gears and shifter to act as a transmission.

The mid-drive motor also allows you to switch between current draw modes and rear gears on your bike. The 36v battery required is sold separately in the 500W kit.

The 750 W kit, however, comes with a 48V 15Ah lithium iron battery included. (If you live in Europe and want to abide by the Eurocode, remember that the maximum motor size you are allowed to install is 250 W with a turbo of 350 W).

This electric bike kit works best on mountain bikes, but can also be used on cruisers, make sure you have a thick enough rear wheel if you go for one of the bigger sized motors, as it is a lot of power to put down onto the road!

There are many pros to the kit. The electric bike kit with the battery is very easy to install. The instructions are straightforward, and if you do not have the right tools, local bike shops will know how to install it. Another pro is the ease of the setup once the parts are installed.

A third advantage is how easy people are finding it to go up and down hills when commuting to work, and the motor can power up hills. The kit also has waterproof connectors which many find great when riding in inclement weather. You can also expect great customer service from Amazon and Tyro EV.

Finally, and possibly most importantly, if you live in a place where it snows or gets icy in the winter, we highly recommend getting a mid-drive kit like this Bafang conversion kit. Having the ability to easily change wheels and tires, without having to completely disconnect the motor is a great bonus and a huge timesaver.

While there are many pros to the kit, there are a few cons to mention as well. A few users of the product have found the battery socket to malfunction when using the bike kit too much. Another con is that users have to charge the battery for a very long time to recharge it to 100%.

Using the motor only, without providing pedal assist, will drain the battery a lot faster than using it with the pedal assist option.

Overall, this is an excellent kit and comes with the electric-biking.com stamp of approval!
